PSHE Leader: Mrs Jo Lacey
Curriculum Design
To provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community.
Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
They learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.
Intent
Jigsaw PSHE will support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which will enable pupils to:
• Have a sense of purpose
• Value self and others
• Form relationships
• Make and act on informed decisions
• Communicate effectively
• Work with others
• Respond to challenge
• Be an active partner in their own learning
• Be active citizens within the local community
• Explore issues related to living in a democratic society
• Become healthy and fulfilled individuals
Implementation
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in PSHE, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Our PSHE curriculum is based around 6 topics: Being me in my world, Celebrating differences, Dreams and goals, Healthy me, Relationships and Changing me. The Scheme of work also includes opportunities to link British Values, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) and schools key skills into the curriculum. Throughout the school, each year group builds on the knowledge and skills developed in the year prior, building on what the children already understand.
Vulnerable Pupils (SEND and Pupil Premium)
Vulnerable pupils in primary schools are supported in PSHE through a range of inclusive and targeted approaches:
-
Inclusive Curriculum: Lessons are differentiated and designed to be accessible to all learners, using stories, visual aids, and activities to explore sensitive topics safely.
-
Safe Environment: Clear ground rules, circle time, and respectful discussion help create a supportive space where all pupils feel safe to participate.
-
Targeted Support: Vulnerable pupils may receive additional input from ELSAs, pastoral staff, or through small group interventions like nurture groups or SEMH programmes.
-
Safeguarding Focus: PSHE content (e.g. body safety, trusted adults, online safety) plays a key role in safeguarding and early identification of concerns.
-
Staff Training: Teachers receive training in trauma-informed practice and inclusive delivery to meet the needs of all learners.
Impact
Following the implementation of the broad and balanced PSHE curriculum at Old Mill Primary Academy, children will be respectful, responsible, resilient and confident members of society within Broughton Astley and the wider world.
Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
The tools in which our PSHE curriculum provides children with, will ensure they are able to maintain healthy and positive lifestyles with regard to relationships, diet and their own personal identity. As they become more confident throughout the areas of PSHE, building upon our themes year by year, children will understand their personal role in society.
The most significant impact that we want for our pupils, in line with our school rights and responsibilities, is the development of respect for themselves and respect for others.
