Route to Resilience

Route to Resilience is an evidence-based approach to support schools and their families in their work on developing the character, resilience and emotional well-being of children and young people. It is funded as part of the NHS Future in Mind program.

Old Mill started the program in 2018 and in 2019 became an accredited school. It also formed the basis for our enhanced Healthy School status in 2020, based on our work relating to Emotional Health and Well-Being.

Throughout our day at Old Mill, we develop and strengthen character muscles which support the development of character and in turn enable our pupils to be socially and emotionally aware and ultimately, 'mentally stronger'.

Within lessons children are aware which character muscles they are using or strengthening, to enable them to tackle problems they may face. On the playground, children are encouraged to reflect on their social character muscles such as 'teamwork' or 'listening' in order to be a role model for those around them. Each term, pupils complete homework with their parents which is linked to our Route to Resilience work in school.

Recognition is provided through verbal recognition in lessons, house points, teacher feedback and marking, minion cards etc.
