At Old Mill, we teach online Safety in all year groups through our Computing, PSHE and RSE curriculum. We also teach online safety through assemblies, celebration days and in many 'hidden' ways across the curriculum. As your child moves through the year groups at Old Mill, they will experience a more detailed and age relevant curriculum linked to online safety. Our curriculum covers social media and how to stay safe. The detail of our approach to teaching online safety and how we keep pupils safe in school, with our robust online filtering and monitoring systems, can be found in our Online Safety Policy.
Our school's computing leader is Mr K Butler. He is supported by Mrs Smith-Stewart, Head teacher/DSL. They are responsible for the leadership of online safety at Old Mill, in partnership with the school's safeguarding governor.
Keeping children safe is our fundamental priority at Old Mill. Our staff follow the DFE’s ‘Teaching Online Safety in Schools' guidance.
We are proud to hold the Leicestershire Local Authority E Safety award. The award allows schools to demonstrate outstanding practise in online safety and is externally validated by the Local Authority. Schools have a statutory duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of their pupils, including their use of digital and mobile technology, including the internet. Parents and carers rightly expect schools to equip their children with the skills to manage the very real risks associated with living in a digital age.
Navigating the modern world of social media can be extremely challenging for parents. Our safeguarding team recommend that parents make themselves aware of age limits on social media sites and ensure their child uses YouTube Kids as opposed to the open YouTube that adults access.
